Welcome back everyone!
There are some significant changes this year in regards to ELL assessment. Please make sure that you look over the 15-16 Guide to ELP Assessments which can be found here.
Exiting criteria HAS NOT CHANGED. See page 24 of the guide for more information.
There will be NO MELL Conference this year. We will all be participating in the Federal Programs Conference sponsored by DESE NEXT September. In the meantime, I’ve arranged to bring the conference to Springfield. I’ve included a flyer outlining all the upcoming professional development opportunities about working with ELs. Further plans for spring are in the works, depending on the turnout in the Fall. PLEASE SIGN UP.
All ACCESS training will need to be done on-line this year. Since it is a brand new test, you will need to recertify in all areas. Check the ELP guide for more information. We will be offering the alternate ACCESS this year, to be used for MAP-A qualified students only.
The St. Louis MELLsters share some good information here: http://www.hectv.org/magazine/hec-tv-magazine-august-2015/ pages 8-9.
A super interesting post about ELLs and the summer slide is here. This one would be good to share with everyone working with ELs in your district.
A report on ELs with learning disabilities published this summer is interesting.
Best new apps for back to school is here.
If you have not yet joined DESE’s ELL Listserve, please join us here.
Free SLP app called Quick Artic looks like it might be promising for vocabulary building.
A VERY interesting study on how long it takes students to reach proficiency is here.
An article about a bilingual HS student volunteering at the local elementary school is here. Think outside the box. people. We have lots of bilingual students in our area. Use them as A+ tutors to help your newcomers. Consider asking for your students in the Advanced Spanish classes in your high schools to help out too. They need practice with native speakers to help with their fluency. It’s a win-win for everyone. Sadly, students cannot be used as interpreters because of confidentiality issues.
Please join all of us in welcoming Landon Wood to the MELL team. Landon works at DESE as the Director of ELL Curriculum. He is terrific. Come next week and meet him in person. You are going to love him.
If you have new staff that would like to receive future e-mails, please let me know and I will add them to my list.
It’s going to be a great year. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have.
Claudia
