Happy Monday all my ESL friends,
It’s hard to believe another school year is up and running. I’m relearning traffic patterns, fighting for parking and digging myself out from under a blizzard of emails. I hope everyone’s year is off to a great start!
Don’t forget to sign up for Karen Nemeth on October 9. She is a national expert on young learners (pre-k – 3). This is for anyone who works with younger English Language Learners. Bring your classroom teachers. If you have title III money you can use it for this. All districts with English Learners should be providing classroom teachers with PD about working with them successfully. This would fulfill that requirement as well. More information about her work can be found here.
Webinar on Sept 2 about employability skills here
Multiple language academic language glossaries for k-12 from New York can be found here.
Captions for Literacy Website http://captionsforliteracy.org/index.php . Captioning is a great way to boost receptive language skills, both listening and reading.
Supporting Parent Engagement in Linguistically Diverse Families to Promote Young Children’s Learning is a brand new study that may be of some interest.
St Louis Public Schools have several documents that they have translated into several languages. Landon will be working to make some generic documents available through the new MELL website. In the meantime, as long as you give credit to SLPS, they have graciously allowed us to use their information.
Powerful video from 2014 Michigan teacher of the year, Chase Mielke. I think that I needed to hear this, too.
Tween Tribune is put out by the Smithsonian (my new favorite place) and has current events texts at different levels for the 5-6 crowd. They don’t seem to go much below a lexile of 500, but have several texts that would be appropriate for younger readers.
Chin Dictionary can be found here. I have no idea if it is any good or not, but it does exist.
Landon shared this article about migrants and the use of technology. Pretty fascinating.
Litographs is giving away free classroom posters. If you’ve never seen these, you should. Deadline is September 4.
We have had some amazing ESL PD in the last few weeks. Come and share in the fun! Feel free to invite me over for a visit. Talking about ELs is what I like best!
